CIW-END

CI Way- Reflections

THE END: Well, that went well! From an idea, came a plan, resulting in a magnificent walk – ending with a total of 130 miles and over 17,000 feet of ascent.
The Channel Island Way is now complete and it exceeded my expectations. Clearly, some of it was already known to me but I embarked on this with a fresh set of eyes, taking into account the journey as a whole, noticing the similarities and differences that exist between the Islands.
Having 5 Islands, does keep the walk fresh, those little boat trips renewing the adventure as you disembark in a new location, ready to enjoy what the day brings. This is particular felt in the 3 smaller isles of Sark, Alderney and Herm, as the whole is experienced in the one day, somehow making it feel more defined and complete.
I enjoyed nearly all of the walks immensely but I think my day in Sark must rank as favourite. It is a special place and on a glorious Spring day it is magical. Of the 2 larger Islands, my last day walking in Jersey probably just makes top spot – and I certainly would not have anticipated that. There is no real answer as to why, it is just the sum of time, weather, mood and fate coming together, sometimes when least expected. And to round out a third mention, perhaps Herm. Not a big walking day but just fabulous fun in the sun.
All Islands constantly offered something of interest and where possible I explored off track to some degree, finding new places and experiences, enjoying taking in the scene. From ancient monuments and odd structures, picture postcard harbours to the numerous Victorian era forts and towers, the Second World War bunkers and batteries and other reminders of the Island’s Occupation, there were a lot of man-made or historical points of interest, these all adding to the main event – the beauty of nature.
That nature is exquisite, with lumpy cliffs, sandy beaches, rocky coves and of course the ever-present sea, in all its moods and levels. This scenery was enhanced when enjoyed in the monthly format, which turned out to be a superb method of approaching this trip. If walked in a week or so you could still enjoy differing weather and tides, but spreading throughout the year allowed changes in seasons to be felt as well – wrapped up against the chill February wind on the NE Guernsey coast, feeling the warmth of the Spring sunshine and seeing budding flowers in Sark, swimming in the sea in splendid Herm Summer sunshine, through to the early chill in the Autumn air and kicking through the horse chestnut cases and leaves on Jersey North facing cliffs.
A great range of walking, superb scenery, full of variety and interest – what more could you want. Truly epic!
