SUNDAY 28TH JANUARY 2018: January is an inauspicious start to the whole trek. Generally poor weather and health mean it is down to the last Sunday to complete the targeted first stage. My daughteris joining me and given she wants to watch “Feds” in the Australian Open tennis final we elect to have an early start and see if we can catch the sunrise over Herm and the other Islands.
The weather forecast has shown partly cloudy but not too bad, however, we encounter a grey, misty, drizzle filled start…really not inspiring! Unfortunately, there is no way the sun is breaking through that for a while so bang go the photo ops.
We take off from the Liberation Monument and along “the Front” but the views disappoint, Herm and the other Islands shrouded in mizzle, not improving much around the industrial areas and around The Bridge. We continue around to Bordeaux but still not much going for us, the tide is out so less of a picture postcard, the paths are soggy and muddy, pooled with water from yesterday’s rain. The kiosks are not open yet – we are too early - so no chance to stop for a hot drink.
After nearly a couple of hours and just over 5 miles we reach Beaucette Marina. We did think of stopping there for a bacon sarnie and drink…but shut! Although the sun is trying hard to come through we decide enough is enough and call it a day. We go home and watch Feds (win of course!)
Here’s to February and hopefully an improvement all round!
