27TH JULY 2019:  Hike to Breiskrednosi summit
2019 was a year of shorter adventures for me, including a fair bit of cycling, but the highlight was undoubtedly a 3 day trip to “Hike, Kayak and wild camp the Norwegian Fjords” arranged through Much Better Adventures. I lucked out with a great group and unbelievable weather for the area. An incredible trip that I will always remember
The middle day was a climb to reach the Breiskrednosi summit (at 1,189 metres), giving some spectacular views over Nærøyfjord, our kayaking home on the surrounding days
The total walk was apx 20km, with ascent of apx 1,500 metres, from sea (fjord) level to the summit
The day started (for me) early, as I woke at 5:00am, a blessing as I rolled out of my tent and sat on a rock at edge of fjord watching suns rays catch the surrounding mountains, all otherwise entirely still, quiet, serene. That in itself was amazing. I had to pinch myself it was real!
Eventually the rest of the team surfaced and we had a campfire breakfast and packed for the day. Our camp was across the fjord from our hike start so we had about a 1km paddle first
The guided hike up was reasonably straight forward, obviously steep in places, but with good weather, company and of course the scenery the time flew past. I liked that we could fill our water bottles from the flowing streams/waterfalls – fresh water with a 1,000 metre filter!
The summit predictably had amazing views and that’s the best spot I have had for a brew! No point bothering with words – look at the pics!
The return to our camp base was a reverse of our morning climb and kayak, arriving “home” allowing a sense of deep satisfaction on a fantastic day outing
A swim in the fjord to freshen up, then sitting in the water on shoreline, skimming stones, chatting followed up by campfire eating and socialising until late at night (with daylight until past midnight) finished off a day to remember
A superb hike on the perfect adventure
