Cumbria Way - Day 3

THURSDAY 5TH MAY 2022:   This should be a short, gentle day heading towards the big Langdale Pikes, a generally low level walk but often with good mountain views for dramatic effect, which should be on show today given a dry forecast with good visibility. The day starts well with a very pleasant walk out of Coniston, all pastures, forest, riverside – just a lovely early morning jaunt. It is calm and I can hear the birds singing, the brooks babbling and the lambs baaing
After about 3 miles I reach Tarn Hows, a large, man-made lake, which is a popular attraction. The official CW route heads along the Western shore, but I opt for the (longer) Eastern side which seems more scenic, this after a quick divert to peak at the small waterfall of Tarn Gill. Tarn Hows is just lovely, very pretty and a nice atmosphere, with lots of people strolling around enjoying the views
I complete a loop of much of the Tarn and then head off North, initially on paths, then crossing a busy road (a shock to the senses as it has been so peaceful) to reach the forest area of Colwith. I ramble through the forest, getting slightly lost in the process, but find my way to the river and Colwith Force waterfall, a small optional detour from the route. Nice
Next up is river country, with water being the main feature on the approach to Elterwater village, where I stop for a later lunch at The Brittania Inn. It is busy outside (lots of walkers!), but I find a table and enjoy a leisurely bite to eat. That description sums up the day as it has been a slow pace so far – about 9 miles in 4 hours – but I have been enjoying the route, feeling no need to rush, just savouring the surroundings
That approach continues in my final 3+ miles stretch, this through the Great Langdale area, where I am to follow the valley floor, between hills/mountains either side, to my end point of the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. And what a gorgeous stretch this is, superb. This time of year is delightful with the flora and fauna, also with the fields full of playful lambs….they are so cute! And, of course, there is the wonderful, grey slate everywhere, such a beautiful material
At one point I meet a chap who says he has walked this route numerous times but has just found a perfect spot nearby to sit and enjoy. So, with no encouragement needed, I follow the recommendation and he is right, it is perfect for the eyes & ears. Much fanfare is given to the mountain tops, but being in the valley and enclosed by the mountains is also stunning
I take a slow stroll on to ODGH – slow, as I don’t want this to end – but end it must. From the itinerary, you would not necessarily pick this out as that special a day, but for some reason this has been a stand-out walk for me. Nothing too strenuous, shorter than normal, but always stimulating, giving great vibes and a happy head space. A wonderful day
